Deputy Premier John Rau MP Minister for Industrial Relations has issued a statement in relation to the tragic incident that occurred at the Royal Adelaide Show on 12 September 2014, which led to the death of an eight-year-old girl, Adelene Leong.
Adelene Leong, who was visiting Adelaide from Malaysia, was flung from the Airmaxx 360 ride and died later in hospital from her injuries.
SafeWork SA has now filed charges in the Industrial Relations Court alleging breaches of the work health and safety legislation by Safe is Safe Pty Ltd and Mr Hamish Munro, who inspected and verified the safety of the Airmaxx 360 ride. These charges have followed an extensive investigation by SafeWork SA, which has worked closely with South Australian Police, and consideration of the brief of evidence provided by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Charges were laid against both Safe is Safe Pty Ltd and Mr Munro as a Category 1 offence under the State’s work health and safety legislation. This is the first Category 1 offence to be prosecuted in South Australia.
